Let's Dance

Lasya was founded in 1980 by RajashreeShirke with the goal of sharing the sheer joy of Classical dance that she experienced, with her students and audience. From the outset she firmly believed in the inherent perfection of a dancer’s body and mind. This belief manifested itself as she began the rigorously-disciplined training of students, in the twin contrasting dance styles Kathak and Bharat Natyam.

Lasya…the Journey

The year 2000 witnessed the birth of ‘Lasya’ trust. In December 2003, the - “Lasya Centre for Dance Education and Performing Arts” introduced for the first time, a Diploma course in Dance [Kathak] affiliated to the SNDT Women's University, under the Department of Life-Long Learning and Extension work.

In India, dance exists in several forms and styles, ranging from folk to classical and martial. Any education in Indian arts therefore should include practice, aesthetics, study of allied arts and the discovery of the individual’s creative potential.

We believe that a full–fledged artiste must not only be well grounded in practical training, but also should be knowledgeable of the historical and cultural backgrounds of her/hisdance form.
